Leadership and Community

Practical articles about listening, accountability, volunteering and community-centred leadership.

Community leadership is often visible in ordinary actions: listening, organizing, following through and helping other people participate.

Start with the need

A project should respond to a real community need rather than begin with a desire for attention. Speak with the people affected and identify existing organizations already doing the work.

Make participation accessible

Clear expectations, reasonable time commitments and accessible locations make it easier for people to contribute.

Provide several ways to participate when possible.

Share credit

Community initiatives depend on volunteers, staff, partners and residents. Recognizing the full team encourages continued involvement.

Communicate limits

Be clear about what a project can accomplish, how decisions will be made and what resources are available.

Responsible leadership does not promise outcomes it cannot control.
